REVIEW: Apple Watch & Stainless Steel Link Bracelet (3 Years later)

In this review I will cover:

  • Apple Watch series 0, as of Dec 2017 (in-depth review)
  • Stainless Steel Link Bracelet

I bought my fist Apple Watch on June 29, 2015. As of now, it is called “Apple Watch series 0” with the current model being “series 3”. (Series 0, 1, 2, 3 respectively)

The Apple Watch “series 0”

“I have tried swimming in the ocean/pool with my watch “Series 0″ with no problem.”

Currently the Apple Watch is supported by the latest update “WatchOS 4.2″.

All other functions are the same as series 3 except:

  • Swimming mode – Track your swimming workouts.
  • “Deep” waterproofing – I have tried swimming in the ocean/pool with my watch “Series 0” with no problem. However, it is not recommended by Apple.
  • Heart rate notifications – Watch will notify you if your heartbeat is out of rhythm.
  • “Qi” wireless charging pads support – Series 3″ is the only apple watch that supports universal “Qi” charging. While “series 0, 1, 2” supports “Qi with Apple’s MFi-based authentication”.
  • Series 3 LTE’s calling and notifications on-the-go – Only watch “series 3 LTE” will support this function currently. Current “series 3” also doesn’t support LTE usage.

The use of Apple Watch has improved significantly after WatchOS 4 through:

  • Siri WatchfaceMost significant improvement is through this watchface. Siri will intelligently choose the most important information to show you on the home screen.
    • Weather
    • Sunrise/Sunset time
    • Now playing music
    • News headline
    • Upcoming on calendar
  • Workout app
    • Swipe to the left = pause/end workout
    • Swipe to the right = music control
  • Music Control – When you start playing music through your phone, Apple Watch will automatically show music information and controls when you lift up your hand to see the watch.

Verdict on Apple Watch

Apple watch is a very useful device. Apple might think it is repetitive to an iPhone. However, having a quick glance to notifications on your wrist comes in very handy while you are on the move or busy. (You just need to turn off un-useful notifications to show on your watch.) Checking hourly weather, closing moving ring, and controlling music from your wrist are also very fun experience on theApple Watch. “Series 0” with latest update isn’t much slower than “series 3”.

Stainless Steel Link Bracelet

“Rolex used the same 316L stainless steel wristband as the Apple Watch before 2000s.”

I picked the link bracelet with the reason that I was curtain Apple will continue the support of the same bands through their future Apple Watch updates to come no matter how much the look of the watch changes. And that a stainless steel link bracelet is an all-in-one watch band for any occasions; from gym, to beachside, to formal events.

It is very light and thin. Quality was built to perfection with no uneven gaps. However, it does scratched up easily. It doesn’t get any dings or dents with hard hitting, but the matte brushed metal look scruffs off to be more shiny. (Still looks brushed overall)

There are no ways of getting rid of the scratches. If you use metal polisher it will polish off the brushed metal look of the band. However, this goes the same way with any high-end watches on the market; i.e. Rolex watches.

Crafted from the same 316L stainless steel as the case. The link has more than 100 components. Takes nearly 9 hours to cut the links for a single strap. (source: Apple)

Fun fact: Rolex used 316L stainless steel on their wrist bands before year 2000s. Now they use 904L stainless steel with about x2 more chromium; harder and more resistant to corrosions. (source: rolexforums.com)

The butterfly closure of the strap reminds me of that of the Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak 15400 stainless steel band; which is one of my favorite watches to date.

The band costs US$449+tax for both 38mm and 42mm. Apple has discontinued the sale of stainless steel link bracelet bundle with the current Apple Watch release.

Verdict on Stainless Steel Link Bracelet

My band has been through everything from ocean salt water, to hitting metal weights in the gym. 3 years of wearing almost everyday It has handled itself well for every occasion. I have bought a sport band to use while playing sports that requires a lot of arm movements since the stainless steel band tends to move a lot while swinging my arms.
